F1 Officials Hope Rain to Quench Grass Fires at Suzuka

Formula 1 officials are awaiting predicted rainfall to resolve the issue of grass fires that have caused multiple red-flag stoppages during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend. The fires, which broke out in different areas of the track, have been linked to sparks from titanium skid plates under the cars.

A total of five red flags were waved due to the grass fires, including one in qualifying on Saturday. Despite water being applied to key areas of dry grass before final practice, further fires disrupted the session. Officials are now hoping that overnight rain will alleviate the problem.

If the forecast is incorrect, a burn operation may be considered as an alternative measure to prevent future fires. However, this option poses risks due to uncontrolled burns and environmental concerns. The FIA has prioritized aesthetics over such measures, opting instead to water the affected areas to mitigate the issue.

Key drivers, including Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, are optimistic about the impact of rain on the grass fires. With a predicted 13-15C temperature, the dry grass is highly susceptible to ignition. The FIA’s efforts to prevent fires will be closely monitored as the weather forecast evolves.
