Syrian Rebels Capture Key City of Hama

Syrian rebels have captured the strategic city of Hama in a major victory against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The capture comes after weeks of rapid advances across northern Syria, leaving Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies reeling.

The rebels, who have burst forth from years of frozen frontlines, now control a crucial central city they never managed to seize before. The Syrian army has redeployed outside the city to preserve civilian lives and prevent urban combat.

Hama’s capture is seen as a significant blow to Assad’s regime, with potential implications for his grip on power. Rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Golani declared full control over Hama, warning against any involvement by other Iran-aligned forces.

The rebels plan to march south towards the city of Homs, which links Damascus to the north and coast. This could cut off Damascus from the coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect.

Hama is critical for controlling two major towns with significant minority communities. The capture also raises concerns about the potential return of Syrian refugees now living in Turkey, a goal for Ankara.

The international community has urged restraint, with the UN Secretary-General calling for an immediate humanitarian response and a return to a U.N.-facilitated political process.
