A rare and deadly form of hantavirus has claimed three lives in a rural California town, local health officials announced. The victims were all residents of Mammoth Lakes, which is unusual given the time of year.
The hantavirus, typically spread by rodents, was responsible for the death of Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, in February 2023. This outbreak highlights the potential risks associated with the virus during the summer months when rodent activity peaks.
As the number of victims is higher than usual for this time of year, officials are taking extra precautions to prevent further cases.
