Pope Surprises Pilgrims with Unplanned Visit to St Peter’s Square

Pope Francis made a surprise appearance in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, April 6, during the Mass for the Jubilee of the Sick and Healthcare Workers. The Pope, who was not scheduled to make any official appearances, passed through the congregation and addressed the gathered pilgrims with brief words of gratitude.

Following his visit, Pope Francis returned to his Casa Santa Marta residence, where he has been recovering from illness since March 23. The Pope wore nasal cannulas during his appearance in an effort to facilitate breathing.

Pilgrims responded enthusiastically, applauding and cheering as the Pope departed. According to the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis had completed the necessary steps for a plenary indulgence by receiving reconciliation, praying in St Peter’s Basilica, and passing through the Holy Door. This means he has obtained a special forgiveness with the pilgrims who joined him at the Jubilee event.

The Holy See reported on Friday that Pope Francis’ health was improving slightly, and the Pope was in good spirits.
