Four Foods Key to Living to 100 Revealed – Fizzy Drinks and Pastries Take Toll

Scientists have identified four key foods that can help you live to 100, while also revealed which two contribute to an early death. A Mediterranean-style diet plan, which features lean meat, poultry, grains, fruit, vegetables, and unsaturated oils like olive or sunflower oil, has long been associated with a low risk of obesity and diet-related illnesses.

A new study published in The Lancet found that sticking to this diet can slash the risk of suffering an early death by over 20%. The researchers tracked the food intake of over 11,000 adults with an average age of 48 and found that higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with lower all-cause mortality.

The four foods that were identified as crucial for reducing mortality risk are: fruits, dairy, nuts, and unsaturated oils like olive or sunflower oil. On the other hand, regularly consuming fizzy drinks and pastries may increase the chances of early death.

Dr. Mercedes Sotos Prieto, an assistant professor in environmental health at the Autonomous University, said that higher adherence to the diet was associated with lower all-cause mortality. The researchers also found that participants who followed the PHD (Planetary Health Diet) eating plan closely had a 22% lower chance of dying than those in the lowest third.

The findings suggest that adopting a Mediterranean-style diet and sticking to its key components may have substantial health and planetary advantages, as well as a lower chance of suffering an early death.
