Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Signs 14-Year Extension Worth $500M

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a 14-year, $500 million contract extension with star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., according to reports. The deal, which includes no deferrals, makes it the second-largest in MLB history behind only Juan Soto’s $765 million deal with the New York Mets.

Guerrero, 26, will now be with the Blue Jays through the end of the 2039 season, effectively keeping him in Toronto for the rest of his MLB career. The extension comes after Guerrero reportedly broke off talks with the team ahead of spring training but didn’t completely shut them down. He had made it known that he wanted $500 million.

Guerrero has been a solid star for the Blue Jays since making his MLB debut in 2019, earning four All-Star selections and posting impressive numbers, including a .323 batting average with 30 home runs and 103 RBI last season. The team’s decision to give him exactly what he was asking for suggests they want to build around him for years to come.

While Guerrero is considered one of the best players in baseball, it remains to be seen whether he will lead the Blue Jays to their first World Series title since 1993.
