Tensions between Algeria and its neighboring countries, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, have escalated after Algeria shot down a Malian drone. The incident has led to a deterioration in relations, with all three countries recalling their ambassadors from Algiers.
Algeria has banned flights to and from Mali for “recurrent violations” of Algerian airspace. This decision follows the destruction of the aircraft, which was found flying near the border town of Tin Zaouatine on March 31-April 1. The drone’s presence was deemed a threat by Algeria, which claimed it had violated its airspace by over 2km.
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a confederation of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, has accused Algeria of an “irresponsible act” that violates international law. The AES considers the action an aggression against the entire confederation and a threat to regional stability.
Mali’s Prime Minister General Abdoulaye Maiga has linked the incident to alleged support from Russia for terrorism. Algerian officials have denounced Mali’s use of Russian mercenaries and armed drones near the border town, where the drone was found.
The developments mark a significant shift in relations between Algeria and its neighbors, who had previously relied on the country as a mediator in regional conflicts. The AES was formed last year to address security concerns in the Sahel region, which has been plagued by armed groups affiliated with ISIS and al-Qaeda.
