Google TV is set to introduce a new requirement for its devices starting April 2025. As of then, all new Google TV devices will need to have a “Free TV” or “Live TV” shortcut button on their remotes. The change was informed to partners early last year, but it’s now being enforced.
The move comes after the positive reception of free live TV channels on Google TV. The company claims that users have given overwhelmingly positive feedback, which suggests that this new requirement is indeed in place.
Currently, only a few devices, including those from Walmart and Xiaomi, come with the “Free TV” button on their remotes. However, most existing devices with standard remote designs already qualify for this change.
Google TV provides access to various free live TV options like local news, popular shows, and movies. The requirement will help offer users a consistent experience with quick access at their fingertips.
