Natasha Rothwell has addressed the divisive finale scene of HBO series The White Lotus, where her character Belinda leaves the hotel with a substantial amount of money. In an interview with Variety, Rothwell disputed the notion that the final scene mirrored her season one counterpart Tanya’s treatment of Belinda.
According to Rothwell, she intentionally played Belinda as someone who didn’t fully commit to her business venture with Pornchai (Dom Hetrakul). The actress emphasized that Belinda never agreed to move forward with the plan in seasons one and two. Additionally, Rothwell pointed out that Belinda’s son was not living at the hotel, making a long-distance professional partnership impractical.
Rothwell stated, “She doesn’t lead him on. Pornchai was definitely more into Belinda and the idea than Belinda was.” The actress also mentioned that while both characters had feelings for each other, the final scene lacked the same level of intensity as Tanya’s treatment of Belinda in season one.
The comments from Rothwell highlight a nuanced portrayal of her character, differing from some viewers’ interpretations. With the conclusion of season three and the upcoming fourth season, fans will continue to discuss the themes and character developments presented in The White Lotus.
