US airstrikes in Yemen have killed at least two people and wounded nine others, according to Houthi rebels. The strikes were carried out overnight in Saada, a stronghold of the rebel group. The Iranian-backed Houthis claim no casualties from their own security and military leadership.
The incident comes after US President Donald Trump posted a video on Saturday showing a drone strike targeting a gathering of over 70 people gathered in a circle. Trump claimed the strike was meant to prevent an attack on American ships, but the Houthi rebels deny any involvement in such an attack.
Experts say the strikes may be part of a broader effort by the US to pressure Iran, which has backed the Houthis in the war. The US military’s Central Command has not published details about the strikes since March 15, but the White House claims there have been over 200 strikes targeting the Houthis.
The campaign has expanded significantly, hitting multiple governorates simultaneously and targeting Houthi force gatherings. The Houthis had previously targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and killing four sailors. The conflict in Yemen has resulted in at least 69 deaths and raised tensions between the US and Iran.
Yemen’s exiled government claims that the strike killed dozens of Houthi fighters and leaders, including a colonel overseeing police stations for the Houthis in Hodeida. However, these claims have not been verified by other sources.
