Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 carts will retain the bitter taste coating designed to prevent children and animals from accidentally eating them. The coating, made of a substance similar to denatonium benzoate used by farmers to deter animal consumption, is intended to encourage users to spit it out rather than ingest it.
According to GameSpot’s interview with Takuhiro Dohta, Nintendo’s goal remains the same: “We don’t want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption.” Anyone who licks a Switch 2 cartridge will experience a bad taste in their mouth but won’t be harmed otherwise.
The Switch 2 cartridges also have some notable upgrades, including faster speeds and a new color. However, not all Switch 2 cartridges contain game data; some are Game-Key Cards that require a separate game to play. The standard system price is $450, while a bundle with Mario Kart World costs $500.
The Switch 2 launches on June 5, despite initial preorder delays caused by tariffs. Nintendo remains committed to the release date, and users can check out GameSpot’s Switch 2 preorder guide for more information.
