China Uses AI for Disinformation Against Taiwan, Says National Security Bureau

Taiwan’s National Security Bureau has accused China of using generative artificial intelligence to spread disinformation and “divide” the island’s public. In a report reviewed by Reuters, the bureau detected over half a million pieces of controversial messages on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok so far this year.

China has increased its military drills, trade sanctions, and influence campaigns against Taiwan in recent years to force the island to accept Chinese sovereignty claims. The reports says China is also using “cognitive warfare” tactics, including targeting sensitive moments such as President Lai Ching-te’s speech on China.

The bureau attributed the use of AI tools for generating and disseminating controversial messages to the growing maturity of the technology. However, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not comment on the allegations.

Taiwan has responded by increasing its own military presence in response to Chinese coast guard incursions and air balloons in its waters and airspace. The reports said these actions have depleted Taiwan’s resources.
