A somber mood has settled over New York City, but the annual Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is proceeding as scheduled. The event, hosted by Kelly Clarkson, kicked off with a live performance by the singer and will feature performances by The Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Hudson, Dan + Shay, Megan Hilty, and Thalia.
The lighting of the tree, which has become an iconic symbol of the holiday season, takes place at 8:00 p.m. tonight. Despite the tragic shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was killed outside a hotel in Midtown on Wednesday, authorities have not disrupted the event.
Police are still searching for the suspect, described as wearing a cream coat and carrying a grey rucksack, but tourists remain undeterred. An NYPD spokesperson has called the shooting a “brazen targeted attack,” with a $10,000 reward offered for information leading to the gunman’s capture.
The city is on high alert, with a significant police presence in the area. However, many visitors are focused on enjoying the festive atmosphere and special performances. The event will also feature a ring of steel around the tree, intended to provide an added layer of security.
