A military alliance of three West African countries – Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger – has recalled their ambassadors from Algeria in response to the downing of a Malian drone. The move comes after Algeria blamed the Malian government for violating its airspace.
The Sahel Alliance, also known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), condemned the act as “irresponsible” and a violation of international law. Mali’s Prime Minister denied any wrongdoing by his country, saying the action proved Algeria sponsors terrorism.
Tensions between Algeria and its southern neighbours have been rising since the AES countries left a regional military group and created their own security partnership. Analysts say the incident is unlikely to escalate into a full-blown conflict.
The Sahel Alliance’s move follows a growing rift between Algeria and Mali, which has seen Algeria denounce the direction taken by Mali’s new government and its efforts to quash rebellion in northern Mali. The conflict has drawn in Russian mercenaries and armed drones, which has alarmed Algerian officials.
The incident highlights the complexities of regional politics in West Africa, where countries are seeking to balance their relationships with other nations while also addressing internal security challenges.
