Leaders of France, Egypt, and Jordan have called for the Palestinian Authority to lead post-war governance in Gaza, amid a stalemate over who should rule the territory. French President Emmanuel Macron, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II made the statement during a meeting in Cairo on April 7.
The three leaders emphasized that Hamas should have no role in governing Gaza once its war with Israel is over. They also backed a Gaza reconstruction plan endorsed by the Arab League to counter a US proposal to relocate the territory’s inhabitants elsewhere.
Macron, who has expressed opposition to any displacement of Palestinians, hailed his government’s efforts on the reconstruction plan. The Palestinian Authority, dominated by Hamas’s rival party Fatah, currently controls some areas in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The leaders called for an “immediate return” to a ceasefire, which was brokered by Egypt along with Qatar and the United States. However, Israel has resumed intense bombardment across Gaza, killing over 1,391 Palestinians since March 18.
Egypt, Jordan, and other countries have expressed concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where 2.4 million people are affected. The French presidency also set up a call with US President Donald Trump, Sisi, and King Abdullah to discuss the situation in Gaza, amid calls for a just solution for the Palestinian plight.
