Jared Isaacman Nominated for NASA Administrator

The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled a confirmation hearing for Jared Isaacman to become the next NASA administrator, after industry and some committee members pushed for his nomination. The hearing, set for April 9 at 10am Eastern, will also consider Olivia Trusty’s nomination to join the Federal Communications Commission.

Isaacman’s background as a businessman and private astronaut has led supporters to believe he is well-suited to lead NASA during a period of increased reliance on commercial capabilities. Thirty former NASA astronauts signed a letter calling for a confirmation hearing “as soon as practical” on Isaacman’s nomination, citing his ability to apply his vision and business acumen to make NASA a leader.

However, concerns remain about the impact of the new administration’s changes, including significant layoffs and budget cuts. Representative George Whitesides warned Congress against making further structural or budgetary changes until an administrator is confirmed. Senator Jerry Moran expressed support for Isaacman’s nomination, stating he discussed topics such as exploration and scientific cooperation with him during their meeting.

The earliest the Senate Commerce Committee will vote on sending Isaacman’s nomination to the full Senate is likely April 28, following a two-week break in mid-April.
