Indie Developer Tonda Ros Takes Us Inside Blue Prince, a Mystical Game About Doors and Discovery
Imagine standing in front of an unfamiliar door, wondering what lies beyond it. This is the driving force behind Blue Prince, a game created by indie developer Tonda Ros. For eight years, Ros has been working on this atmospheric game, which combines elements of mystery, strategy, and discovery.
The game takes place in Mount Holly Manor, a mysterious estate with shifting rooms and ever-changing expectations. Each door you open can lead to one of three different rooms, giving you a unique choice every time. As you explore the manor, you’ll discover new rooms, items, and puzzles, each contributing to an adventure that will be wildly different from every other playthrough.
To create this game, Ros drew inspiration from big ideas in different worlds. The result is a first-person puzzle adventure with drafting mechanics similar to a tabletop card game. But how does it work?
The game’s core mechanic involves floor plan drafting, where you build rooms one at a time, door by door, blueprint by blueprint. As you create, you’ll explore the manor, searching for answers and clues. Each day, the house will have a completely different layout, with new doors, items, and puzzles to discover.
Designing puzzles was a challenge, but Ros’s approach makes the experience special. There are no puzzles to solve; instead, there are alternate avenues of progression and various solutions to challenges. If you get stuck, don’t worry – exploring the manor will lead you to the answers you need.
After eight years of development, Blue Prince is finally ready for release on April 10 as a day one PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title. As Ros says, “the less you know about this game going in, the better.” So, get ready to unlock the secrets of Mount Holly Manor and start your own adventure in Blue Prince.
