Syrian Government Repels Rebel Advance with Russian Aid

The Syrian government, backed by Russian planes, has successfully defended against rebel advances in the northern countryside near Aleppo. A field commander told DPA that the army launched a large-scale attack to retake areas lost to rebels in recent days.

Government forces recaptured Khanaser, 80 km south-east of Aleppo, just under 48 hours after rebels took control on Sunday. They are now advancing towards Safira, a key city gateway to Aleppo, which was captured by rebels last week.

Violent clashes between rebels and government forces were reported around Hama, with warplanes and helicopters carrying out over 45 airstrikes and bombing operations on Tuesday morning.
