A confirmed case of measles has been reported in Allen County, Indiana, marking the state’s first measles case since early 2024. The patient, an unvaccinated minor, is stable and recovering after exposure to the virus.
Measles outbreaks have increased in recent months across the US, with cases reported in several states including Texas, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, California, and Alaska. Indiana has also seen cases in neighboring states Kentucky and Ohio.
Symptoms of measles typically appear 10-14 days after exposure, including a red rash, high fever, sore throat, and watery eyes. The virus is highly contagious and can lead to serious health problems, particularly in children under five, such as ear infections, pneumonia, and brain inflammation.
To prevent further spread, individuals experiencing symptoms should stay home and contact a healthcare provider immediately. Measles vaccines are available by appointment through the Allen County Health Department.
