The Folly of Hockey’s Mt. Rushmore Debate

Mark Madden reiterates that hockey will never have its own Mt. Rushmore, dismissing the idea as a “device of lazy sports media.” Madden argues that the concept is flawed because it doesn’t account for the sport’s unique nature and the fact that no four players can be carved into a mountain.

Madden takes aim at the NHL’s reaction to Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career goal record, calling it “respectably done but never really kicking into overdrive.” The media coverage often focuses on female athletes and actor Dave Coulier rather than the actual players.

The debate surrounding Ovechkin’s record-breaking goal also diverted attention from his team, the Washington Capitals. Madden wonders if the adrenaline from reaching their final seed in the Eastern Conference will dissipate once the record is broken.

Despite the hype, Madden believes that Ovechkin’s achievement doesn’t necessarily make him the best goal-scorer. He names Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy as his top picks for a goal-scoring Mt. Rushmore instead.
