Iranian Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Released on Medical Grounds

Iranian human rights activist and Nobel peace laureate Narges Mohammadi has been released from prison for 21 days on medical grounds, according to her lawyer. The decision comes after a court sentenced her to an additional 15 months in prison for spreading propaganda against the state while in custody.

Mohammadi’s health is reportedly severe, with possible cancer, and her family and supporters describe the temporary release as “inadequate.” They have called for her unconditional release or at least a three-month extension of her leave. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has also joined calls for her permanent freedom, stating that 21 days may not be enough for adequate treatment.

Mohammadi was first jailed in November 2021 for campaigning against capital punishment and the obligatory hijab in Iran. Despite the repercussions, she remains dedicated to her activism and has continued to advocate for human rights. Her family has been vocal about their concerns, including being prevented from offering condolences to her family in Iran following the death of her father earlier this year.
