Tom Hanks’ Wife Rita Wilson: ‘My Other Mother’

Tom Hanks’ daughter E.A. Hanks speaks highly of her mother-in-law Rita Wilson, calling her more than just a stepmother. The 42-year-old author reveals that she considers Rita as one of her parents due to their long-standing relationship.

E.A. and Rita have been together for over three decades, starting with a meeting on the set of the sitcom Bosom Buddies in 1981. E.A.’s father Tom Hanks was still married to Susan Dillingham at the time, but the two eventually divorced in 1985 and Tom began dating Rita.

The couple welcomed two sons, Chester and Truman, before Susan’s death from lung cancer in 2002. E.A. emphasizes that Rita is not just a stepmother, but “my other mother” due to their closeness and the fact that she was with her father since before she could remember.

E.A.’s new book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, explores her complicated past and her journey on a six-month road trip along Interstate 10. Throughout the book, family is at its core, as E.A. navigates her relationships with Rita and her siblings while finding herself.
