HBO has given its approval for a third season of The Last of Us, ahead of the anticipated release of Season 2 on Sunday. According to Deadline, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin had initially envisioned up to four total seasons, aiming to tell the story of the acclaimed video game series.
Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi praised the second season, stating that it was a “masterful follow-up” and expressed faith in the upcoming third season. The early renewal is not entirely unexpected, given the first season’s impressive performance, with an average audience of over 30 million viewers and a premiere episode attracting 4.7 million viewers.
Neil Druckmann attributed the success to his collaboration with HBO and the team at PlayStation Productions. Craig Mazin echoed this sentiment, stating that they exceeded their most ambitious goals with Season 2 and look forward to continuing the story in Season 3.
The third season will mark a continuation of Joel and Ellie’s perilous journey across the U.S., following the events of Season 1 and five years after the initial quarantine zone. The returning cast includes Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley, with new additions Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, and Jeffrey Wright.
The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Evan Wells, Halley Gross, and Neil Druckmann. With the success of The Last of Us, fans can look forward to more of this critically acclaimed series.
