Google Messages Introduces Simple Unsubscribe Option

Google has made it easier to stop receiving spam and promotional messages on its messaging app. A new feature allows users to automatically unsubscribe from automated text messages without having to leave the app.

To use this feature, look for a “Unsubscribe” option at the bottom of automated promotional conversation threads sent from short codes. Tapping this option will prompt a “Why are you unsubscribing?” sheet with options such as “Not signed up,” “Too many messages,” “No longer interested,” and “Spam.” Selecting “Spam” will also give users the option to report the sender.

Once selected, a “STOP command” will be sent automatically, which typically prompts legitimate businesses to remove the user from their texting list. However, if the message is from a spammer, selecting “Spam” may not work.

This feature is currently rolling out to select regions, including the US, UK, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, and Spain. It’s also available for RCS Business Messages users enrolled in the beta program for Google Messages.
