L.A. 2028 Olympics to be Female-Majority Event with Record Participation

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which will feature more women than men for the first time. The Games will have a total of 11,198 Olympians participating, with 50.5% being female. This marks a significant milestone in gender equality at the Olympics.

The IOC has emphasized equality by including more female athletes, medal events in women’s sports, and mixed-gender team events. The 2028 program will feature new mixed-team opportunities in artistic gymnastics, track and field, golf, archery, table tennis, and coastal rowing.

Other notable changes include an expanded women’s soccer field with 16 countries participating, compared to 12 in the men’s field. Women also have equal quota spots in water polo and boxing for the first time.

The LA 2028 Summer Olympics organizers are on track to reach $2 billion in sponsorships by year’s end, moving closer to their target of $2.5 billion needed. The venue master plan was approved, which aims to maximize existing venues and avoid building new permanent infrastructure.

Despite some controversies surrounding the hosting of certain sports, the IOC has expressed confidence in the organizing committee’s plans. The L.A. 2028 Olympics will mark a significant step towards promoting women’s sports and achieving gender equality at the Games.
