A devastating roof collapse at the popular Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic has claimed the lives of at least 124 people. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning during a performance by merengue artist Rubby Pérez and his orchestra, with over 300 people present at the venue.
The cause of the massive collapse is still unknown as rescue efforts continue into their second day. The club’s management has released a statement, collaborating fully with authorities to investigate the incident and provide assistance to those affected.
Reports indicate that 155 ambulance transfers were made to local hospitals, with 145 survivors rescued on Tuesday. However, it remains unclear how many people are still trapped under the rubble.
The Jet Set nightclub is a well-known venue in southern Santo Domingo, famous for its “Jet Set Mondays” events featuring local and international merengue artists. The club has undergone renovations in 2010 and 2015 and was recently affected by a fire caused by a lightning strike in 2023.
Victims of the collapse include Rubby Pérez, the saxophonist, two former Major League Baseball players, Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, and several others, including Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province. The incident is a tragic reminder of the risks associated with overcrowding and structural safety in public venues.
