SEC and Big Ten Powers Dominate Signing Day

The early signing period brought a stark reminder to college football fans as top recruits finalized their college selections. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Big Ten powers led the way, with Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, and Ohio State topping the recruiting standings.

According to Steve Wiltfong, vice president of recruiting and transfer portal for On3, these programs’ success on the field and in the NFL draft have attracted top talent. The order of the top classes is still uncertain, with a couple of top-10 prospects yet to announce their choices.

Oregon had a standout day, flipping cornerback Na’eem Offord from Ohio State and adding quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who initially committed to California. Michigan’s recruiting emergence was another surprise, with quarterback Bryce Underwood switching from LSU, bringing late momentum for the defending national champions.

Other teams saw significant gains, including Auburn, which jumped to sixth in the 247Sports Composite team rankings after posting a fourth consecutive losing season. Florida rose rapidly, thanks in part to freshman quarterback DJ Lagway’s recent performances.

The early signing period highlights the challenges of recruiting in the era of the transfer portal and collectives. LSU coach Brian Kelly emphasized the importance of adapting to the changing landscape, saying it’s “unlike any recruiting period that I’ve ever been involved in.” With most prospects already committed months ago, some changed their minds down the stretch.

As the signing period comes to a close, these top programs are well-positioned for years to come. Their success will be crucial in determining which teams earn College Football Playoff berths.
