The upcoming action-thriller “G20,” starring Viola Davis, promises to deliver a modern take on the genre, echoing the likes of Harrison Ford films. The film’s plot revolves around President Danielle Sutton, a former Iraq war hero turned politician, whose hopes are dashed when mercenaries hijack the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa.
Directed by Patricia Riggen, “G20” tackles contemporary fears such as cryptocurrency, deep fake AI, and economic instability. While some plot points feel forced, the film’s deft sense of tension is elevated by Davis’ performance, which shines in action-packed sequences.
The movie also grapples with issues like misogynoir, highlighting the challenges faced by female leaders in a male-dominated world. However, these themes are sometimes overshadowed by on-the-nose dialogue and an overly didactic tone.
Despite its flaws, “G20” delivers exhilarating set pieces and strong performances from its cast, including Marsai Martin as Sutton’s tech-savvy teenage daughter. The film’s thunderous intentions don’t entirely detract from its entertainment value, making it a watchable, if imperfect, blockbuster thriller.
