Measles Hits Michigan for Fourth Time Since 2013

A fourth person in Michigan has been diagnosed with measles, according to the Mid-Michigan District Health Department. The individual recently traveled out-of-state and is now recovering at home.

This confirms the fourth confirmed case of measles in the state, following previous cases reported in Kent, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Anyone who is not immune to measles is at risk of contracting the disease through exposure to an infected individual.

Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which provides protection for decades. The vaccine’s effectiveness increases if administered within 3 days of exposure. However, infected people can spread the virus several days before symptoms appear, and it may take 1-3 weeks for the disease to affect a new person.

Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, white spots on cheeks, gums, and the roof of the mouth, as well as a rash that starts near the hairline. If you believe you were exposed or have measles, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
