The Indianapolis Colts have released kicker Matt Gay, two years into a four-year contract worth $22.5 million. The move comes after Gay’s performance fell short of expectations, converting just 82.1% of his field goal attempts during the past two seasons.
Gay was lured to the Colts with a lucrative deal in 2023, but failed to live up to the hype. Despite being asked repeatedly about his kicker, coach Shane Steichen stuck with him, citing Gay’s experience and mental toughness. However, Gay struggled with injuries, including a hernia that required surgery during the preseason.
The Colts have struggled to find consistency at kicker since Adam Vinatieri left in 2019. The team signed Spencer Shrader last month, who boasts a perfect 5-for-5 record on field goal attempts in his rookie season.
