OpenAI will retire its GPT-4 AI model from ChatGPT on April 30, replacing it with the newer GPT-4o model. The decision comes after head-to-head evaluations showed that GPT-4o outperforms GPT-4 in writing, coding, and other areas.
GPT-4 was launched over two years ago for ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot on the web. Although it had limitations, the model was a significant upgrade at its release in March 2023. However, it is also one of the models at the heart of copyright disputes between OpenAI and publishers.
The new GPT-4o model has been shown to surpass GPT-4 in various areas, including instruction following, problem-solving, and conversational flow. The retirement of GPT-4 will likely be followed by the release of new models, including a family of GPT-4.1 models and an “o3” reasoning model announced in December.
