The United States has deployed over 10,000 active-duty troops along the southern border to bolster security measures and counter human smuggling networks. The deployment comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen border control and address concerns about migration.
President Trump’s administration has been critical of former President Biden’s response to the issue, describing it as “incompetent.” Democrats have pointed out that Trump scuttled bipartisan legislation aimed at reducing illegal migration without expanding military involvement.
The new deployment includes armored vehicles such as Strykers, designed for rapid infantry delivery and traversal of difficult terrain. Soldiers are patrolling both on foot and in Strykers, with more deployments expected in coming weeks.
However, soldiers have been cautioned about their limited authority to detain migrants due to the Posse Comitatus Act. They can only defend themselves if a situation emerges, carrying rifles and using powerful cameras to detect people from two miles away.
Despite the challenges, soldiers say they are prepared for the mission, drawing parallels with previous deployments such as Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. A commander noted that by maintaining high standards and adaptability, even non-combat missions can be accomplished successfully.
The deployment marks a significant shift in approach to border security, with increased use of military resources and equipment. It remains to be seen how effective this strategy will be in reducing migration and smuggling operations along the southern border.
