European Countries Commit Billions in Military Aid to Ukraine Amid Putin Talks

European countries have pledged billions of dollars in military support for Ukraine as a US envoy met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, fueling hopes for peace efforts. The US envoy, Steve Witkoff, discussed cease-fire proposals with Putin and other officials during his visit to Russia.

New pledges of military aid totaled over 21 billion euros ($24 billion) at a meeting in Brussels, according to British Defense Secretary John Healey. This is the largest boost in funding for Ukraine since the start of the war. The European Union has committed over $26 billion so far.

Ukraine’s air defense system is a key issue being discussed, with the US and EU offering support. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his appeals for Patriot systems after a Russian missile attack in his hometown killed 20 people, including nine children.

Russia has blocked Ukraine’s ceasefire proposal, but US President Donald Trump says Russia must get moving on ending the war. The Kremlin has dismissed Trump’s efforts as futile.

US officials remain committed to securing a peace deal despite the Kremlin’s delays. Observers expect a new Russian offensive in coming weeks, which could strengthen Putin’s hand in negotiations.

European countries will continue to provide military aid to Ukraine, with Estonia monitoring the world armaments market and seeing opportunities for increased support. The Netherlands plans to supply an air defense system, while Germany will provide short- and medium-range systems with missiles.
