Penn State’s hockey team made history with its first-ever Frozen Four appearance, but fell just short in the semifinals against Boston University. The Nittany Lions ended their season with a 23-14-4 record, with freshman Nic DeGraves scoring the lone goal for Penn State in the third period.
Boston University took an early lead and held on to win 3-1. Despite outshooting the Terriers 18-9 in the final period, Penn State was unable to score the tying goal. The team’s season had been marked by a remarkable turnaround from its 0-7-2 start in the Big Ten Conference.
Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky praised his team’s effort, saying “We were left for dead not long ago, and for these guys to come back and play in St. Louis — and how they did it (makes them) such great representatives of the university.” The team’s senior class led by example with leadership on the ice.
The Nittany Lions will be remembered fondly for their impressive ride this season, which included a 13-year journey from Division 1 to the Frozen Four. The team’s dedication and positivity in the face of adversity inspired Gadowsky, saying “They stuck together and stayed positive in the hardest times when it would have been really easy not to.” Despite the loss, Penn State’s players are already looking forward to next season.
