Western Michigan Wins First National Championship Game in Program History

Western Michigan University defeated defending national champions Denver 3-2 in double overtime to advance to their first-ever national championship game. The Broncos, led by forward Owen Michaels’ game-winning goal, outshot the Pioneers 47-22 and controlled the game throughout.

Michaels scored his second goal of the night on a broken play, beating Denver senior goalie Matt Davis high for the winning goal at 26 seconds into double overtime. The Broncos also received goals from fifth-year defenseman Brian Kramer and Zachary Nehring.

Denver’s loss marked their third straight defeat to Western Michigan this season, as the Pioneers struggled to contain the Broncos’ strong offense. Despite being outshot 47-22, the Pioneers had several chances, including a nearly winning dash by Zeev Buium in overtime.

The win marks a historic moment for Western Michigan’s program, which has been rebuilt under head coach Pat Ferschweiler since his arrival in 2021. Ferschweiler has led the Broncos to consistent success, and this victory solidifies their position as one of the top programs in college hockey.

Matt Davis, Denver’s goalie, left a legacy of winning despite losing the game. With a career save percentage above .921 through 93 games, Davis proved himself to be a formidable competitor in the net, holding off Western Michigan’s strong offense throughout the game.

The Broncos will face an unknown opponent on Saturday, but their win marks a significant milestone for the program and its fans.
