Microsoft’s AI Screenshot Tool Sparks Privacy Concerns Again

Microsoft has launched its Copilot+ Recall feature, an AI-powered tool that takes snapshots of users’ screens every few seconds. The tool is now available in preview mode to some Windows Insider software testing programme users.

The feature, which was paused last year due to privacy concerns, allows PC users to easily search through their past activity, including files, photos, emails, and browsing history. Microsoft claims that users can opt-in and pause saving snapshots at any time.

However, critics say the feature could still be misused. Dr Kris Shrishak, a privacy campaigner, has expressed concerns that information about other people, who cannot consent, will be captured and processed through Recall.

The tool stores images of emails and messaging apps, including WhatsApp, which can raise questions about user data protection. Microsoft says it does not share snapshots or associated data with Microsoft or third parties, but critics argue that malicious actors could exploit the images saved by Recall if they gain login access to a device.

The UK’s data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has also been monitoring the situation and expects improved user transparency and safeguarding of personal data.
