Weekend Box Office Preview: Minecraft Movie Leads, King of Kings Delights

The weekend box office is shaping up to be an exciting one, with several highly anticipated movies vying for top spot. A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess and produced by Warner Bros/Legendary, is expected to rake in $80 million at 4,289 theaters, significantly ahead of the same point last year.

Meanwhile, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie has taken a 37% dip in its second weekend for $92.3M. Angel Studios’ animated Biblical movie King of Kings is also looking promising with an opening of $18M-plus at 3,200 sites.

Rami Malek’s thriller The Amateur is set to open with $15M, outperforming critics who gave it a 62% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A24’s Warfare, directed by Alex Garland, has received rave reviews and is expected to earn $8M in its opening weekend.

Universal/Blumhouse’s Drop is also performing well, grossing $7.7M with a high audience score of 74%. The movie has been boosted by early screenings, which contributed to its strong preview performance.

The Minecraft Movie is expected to ease back into the lead position after a successful first week, while King of Kings is positioning itself as a contender in the Biblical animation genre.
