Pakistan-Born Businessman Extradited for Mumbai Terror Attacks

A Pakistani-born Chicago businessman, Tahawwur Rana, has been remanded in custody for 18 days after his extradition to India from the US. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) confirmed that Rana’s extradition was successful and will be questioned about his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Rana, a Canadian citizen, is accused of aiding the attacks by working with childhood friend David Headley to support Lashkar-e-Taiba. On November 26, 2008, 10 militants launched deadly attacks across Mumbai, killing 166 and injuring hundreds.

The US Embassy in Delhi stated that Rana will face trial on 10 criminal charges related to his alleged role in the attacks. In 2011, a US court cleared Rana of directly plotting the attacks but convicted him of supporting the Lashkar-e-Taiba. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2013 before being released in 2020.

Rana’s extradition was approved by President Donald Trump in February 2023 after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a US Supreme Court rejection of his appeals. The NIA will question Rana “in detail” about the attacks to unravel the complete conspiracy behind the deadly assault.
