India Grants National Investigation Agency 18 Days Custody Over Mumbai Attacks Accused

A special Delhi court has granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) 18 days of custodial interrogation for Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The court emphasized the need to provide NIA with sufficient time to thoroughly investigate the matter.

According to the NIA, Rana conspired with David Coleman Headley, who was convicted in the US for his role in the attacks, to conduct reconnaissance of targets in Mumbai. Rana is also accused of planning attacks on the National Defence College (NDC) and Chabad Houses in various cities.

The court granted the NIA’s plea, noting that there was “enough material” reflecting a prima facie case and the “potential role of accused”. The agency will use this time to gather evidence, confront Rana with relevant witnesses and forensic evidence, and conduct medical examinations on him before producing him in court again.

Rana’s lawyer requested medical care for his client due to reported health issues, including cysts in his sinus and intestine problems. The court acknowledged these concerns and directed the legal services counsel to provide Rana with proper medical care while in NIA custody.

The case pertains to national security, with the court stating that a sustained custodial interrogation is required to reach at the root of the matter. This marks the first time an accused has been apprehended in this particular case, and the court deemed it necessary to grant the NIA sufficient time for a thorough investigation.
