YouTube has launched a new feature that enables creators to generate custom, copyright-free instrumental backing tracks using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The “Music Assistant” tool, part of the Creator Music marketplace, allows users to input text prompts and receive generated music without copyright concerns.
Creators participating in YouTube’s Partner Program in the US can access the Music Assistant tab within Creator Music, where they can describe their desired music style, instruments, mood, and video context. The platform provides suggested prompts to help users get started. Once generated, tracks can be downloaded and added to videos.
This feature builds on YouTube’s previous test of “Dream Track,” a generative AI tool powered by DeepMind’s Lyria. The current implementation focuses solely on instrumental music.
The introduction of Music Assistant comes as production music companies like Epidemic Sound experience significant growth in the creator economy space. The company reported substantial financial growth, with revenues increasing by 29% and EBITDA soaring 150%.
Meanwhile, a bipartisan bill aimed at cracking down on unauthorized deepfakes, known as the NO FAKES Act, has gained tech industry support. The bill creates a right of publicity at the US federal level, giving individuals control over their likeness and voice.
YouTube’s CEO stated that the company is working with partners to tackle these issues proactively, highlighting the need for a balance between innovation and responsible deployment of AI tools.
