Trump’s Bitcoin Mining Plan Sparks Industry Concerns Over Carbon Emissions

US President Donald Trump wants all Bitcoin mining done within the country, but his plan may face opposition from Democrats who propose stricter regulations on the industry’s carbon footprint.

The Clean Cloud Act, introduced by Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and John Fetterman, would impose a carbon intensity fee starting in 2026 for operations exceeding regional emissions baselines. This baseline would decline each year until reaching zero in 2035.

The bill aims to address rising power demand from miners and data centers, which are driving up utilities’ rates and restarting fossil fuel plants. The authors argue that the industry must transition to clean energy sources to ensure a net-zero grid.

Trump’s plan for Bitcoin mining in the US is already facing economic pressures, including trade war tariffs on Chinese equipment and plummeting profitability due to falling hash prices. This could make his proposal more challenging, especially for miners using coal or gas, while benefiting those with greener setups.
