The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a new award category at the 2028 Oscars: Best Stunt Design. Eva Mendes, wife of actor Ryan Gosling, is celebrating the move, crediting her husband’s advocacy for its introduction.
Gosling promoted his movie The Fall Guy last year, turning the spotlight on stunt performers and repeatedly highlighting their importance. He introduced a segment at the 2024 Oscars honoring stunt teams, appeared in a Carpool Karaoke segment with stunt performers, and brought them to the film’s premiere for a surprise stunt.
Mendes praised her husband’s efforts, calling it “a HUGE success!” that will last. She also celebrated the stunt community, thanking the incredible performers for their hard work. The Fall Guy was directed by David Leitch, who lobbied for the Academy to recognize stunts at the Oscars, expressing his hope that stunt designers would finally receive the recognition they deserve.
Leitch expressed gratitude for the Academy’s decision, saying it was a “journey” for many in the stunt community. He credited past stunt designers who fought for this category and thanked Chris O’Hara, the winner of the new award. The introduction of Best Stunt Design is seen as a significant step forward for the film industry’s stunt performers, providing them with long-overdue recognition.
