All-Female Space Crew Launches on Blue Origin’s New Shepard

Blue Origin’s latest space tourism mission, NS-31, will make history with an all-female crew. The six women – pop star Katy Perry, “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, author Amanda Nguyen, STEMBoard CEO Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and mission leader Lauren Sánchez – will embark on a 10-minute journey to the edge of space aboard the New Shepard suborbital vehicle.

The NS-31 crew is set to launch at 9:30 a.m. EDT (1330 GMT) on April 14 from Launch Site One in Texas. The flight will take around 10 minutes, with the crew experiencing weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth through the capsule’s large windows.

After reaching an altitude of 62 miles, the capsule will deploy drogue parachutes and main parachutes for a controlled landing back on Earth. Blue Origin has confirmed that it may push the launch window up to an hour if there are any delays.

The NS-31 mission marks the first all-female space crew since Soviet Union’s Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly in space in 1963. The live broadcast will be available on Blue Origin’s website, YouTube, and Space.com.
