Western Michigan’s hockey team has finally achieved a long-awaited goal after defeating Denver in double overtime, making them the eighth Michigan program to reach the national championship game. With this win, the No. 1-ranked Broncos will play Boston University for the title on Saturday night.
The Broncos’ journey was marked by several firsts under fourth-year head coach Pat Ferschweiler, including winning their first NCHC regular-season and tournament titles in the same season. Ferschweiler also won the Spencer Penrose Award as the nation’s top coach earlier this week.
Western Michigan has become the final Michigan program to reach the NCAA national championship game since 2012, when Ferris State made its last appearance. The university is known for its rich hockey history, with seven college teams combining for 31 NCAA final berths and nine national championships.
