Apple Teases Smarter Siri Features Ahead of 2025 Holiday Season

Apple is reportedly preparing to roll out its upgraded Siri features ahead of the 2025 holiday season, according to The New York Times. The virtual assistant is expected to gain new capabilities, including photo editing and sending photos to friends.

The news comes after several setbacks and delays in the project, which have been attributed to leadership issues within Apple’s AI department. Former AI leader John Giannandrea was replaced in March, reportedly due to concerns about his abilities. Additionally, there were clashes between senior directors Robby Walker and Sebastien Marineau-Mes over who should oversee the Siri upgrade.

The project has faced previous setbacks, including a failed attempt to double the team’s budget for AI chips in 2023. Apple’s finance chief Luca Maestri reportedly reduced the increase and directed the team to make their existing chips more efficient, rather than purchasing new ones.

Despite these challenges, The New York Times reports that Apple is now moving forward with its plan to release a “true modernized, conversational version of Siri” in the fall. This would mark one of the earliest prospective rollout timelines for the feature, which was initially expected to arrive with iOS 18.
