Microsoft has quietly reintroduced its controversial Windows Recall feature on Copilot+ PCs in the Release Preview channel, signaling its near-readiness for general availability. The feature, which takes screenshots of your desktop every few seconds and stores them in a local database, allows users to recall their actions at a later time using AI-powered search.
Initially introduced in May last year, Windows Recall was met with backlash from privacy advocates and security researchers due to concerns over data protection and potential misuse. Microsoft initially paused the launch but eventually reintroduced the feature as an opt-in option, restricted to Copilot+ PCs running Windows Insider builds.
The latest build of Recall works with major browsers and saves snapshots locally, requiring Windows Hello authentication for access. However, concerns remain over data sharing and user control, with Microsoft stating that data stays on the local storage and users are in control of deleting or pausing snapshots. Despite reassurances, many users may be skeptical about the feature’s implications.
