Thousands Gather in Support of Serbian President Vucic Amid Protests

Thousands of people from Serbia, Kosovo, and Bosnia gathered in Belgrade to show their support for President Aleksandar Vucic amid months of anti-corruption protests. The rally, which took place on Saturday, was seen as a response to the large anti-government protest held last month.

The protests have been sparked by 16 deaths at a railway station roof collapse and accusations of widespread corruption and negligence. Students, teachers, and farmers are among those participating in the rallies, challenging Vucic’s rule for over 12 years.

In his speech, Vucic told supporters that “the coloured revolution is over” and that nothing would come from their protests. He also promoted a new movement led by his Serbian Progressive Party, which will include other parties from the ruling coalition.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban addressed the rally via video link, saying “Serbian patriots can count on Hungarian patriots.” Tensions between supporters and protesters were high in Novi Pazar, where anti-government activists tried to prevent buses carrying Vucic’s supporters from leaving. In Belgrade, protesters threw eggs at buses trying to reach the city centre, prompting police intervention.

The event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Vucic’s government amid growing protests and allegations of corruption.
