US Senator Bernie Sanders took a surprise turn at the Coachella music festival on Saturday, delivering an impassioned speech that targeted President Donald Trump and billionaires. The 83-year-old senator, who was invited by festival organizers to introduce singer-songwriter Clairo, used his platform to warn of the dangers facing the world since the Trump administration’s return.
Sanders blasted climate change denial, calling it “dangerously wrong,” and urged young people to stand up against the fossil fuel industry. He also criticized billionaires like Elon Musk, saying their influence has hijacked the American political system, working against the interests of working families.
In addition, Sanders attacked pharmaceutical companies and insurance firms for prioritizing profits over healthcare as a human right. The speech, which lasted three minutes, was well-received by the crowd, who cheered his call to action.
The appearance followed a rally in Los Angeles earlier that day, where Sanders performed with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as part of their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour. The event drew 36,000 attendees and featured performances by Neil Young, Joan Baez, and Maggie Rogers.
