Beloved Actress Jean Marsh Dies at 90

Beloved actress Jean Marsh has passed away at the age of 90, her agent confirmed. A British screen and stage star, Marsh won an Emmy in 1975 for her portrayal of Rose Buck in the TV drama “Upstairs Downstairs.” The series, which explored class and relationships in Edwardian England, was a critical and popular success, airing on ITV in the 1970s and later revived by the BBC.

Marsh also appeared in various Hollywood films, including “Cleopatra,” “Willow,” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Frenzy.” Her acting credits spanned multiple genres, including drama, science fiction, and comedy. She was a talented writer as well, co-creating several TV series with her friend Dame Eileen Atkins.

In 2010, Marsh discussed the enduring appeal of period dramas like “Upstairs Downstairs” in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. She suggested that audiences are drawn to stories about social mobility and class struggles because they offer a respite from current events.

Marsh was also recognized for her contributions to drama, including being awarded an OBE in 2012 for her services. Her friend and fellow director Sir Michael Lindsay-Hogg described her as “wise and funny… very pretty and kind” and praised her kindness to those around her. Marsh passed away peacefully in bed, surrounded by loved ones.
