The Lyrid meteor shower is set to appear in the night sky from April 16 to 26, peaking on April 22. Known for fast and bright meteors, it can surprise observers with up to 100 shooting stars per hour during its peak. In average years, the show offers around 10-20 meteors per hour.
The Lyrids originate from space debris burning in our atmosphere, leftover from Comet Thatcher. The meteor shower has a rich history, with recorded sightings dating back to 687 BC in China. For optimal viewing, plan for about half an hour to allow your eyes to adapt to the night sky.
NASA recommends finding a spot away from city lights, bringing comfortable seating, and lying flat on your back with your feet facing east. With patience, observers can catch glimpses of this ancient shower until dawn breaks.
